The\u003cbr\u003esoil is predominantly schistous with small\u003cbr\u003egranite outcrops.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTHE WINE\u003cbr\u003eOne of the principal components of Pombal do Vesuvio comes from the terraced\u003cbr\u003evineyards that surround the ancient dovecote (‘pombal’ in Portuguese) planted\u003cbr\u003eprimarily with Touriga Nacional during 2000 in the heart of this legendary Douro\u003cbr\u003eproperty. Touriga Franca from the Vale da Teja and Minas vineyards is the other\u003cbr\u003esignificant contributor to the Pombal, along with a smaller contribution from the Tinta\u003cbr\u003eAmarela from the Quinta Nova vineyard.\u003cbr\u003eVINTAGE OVERVIEW\u003cbr\u003eThe three months leading up to the vintage were among the hottest and driest ever\u003cbr\u003erecorded in the Douro, with a succession of heatwaves, unprecedented in their scope\u003cbr\u003eand duration. We had — until the end of August — 70% less rainfall than the 30-year\u003cbr\u003eaverage and the soils were visibly parched. However, it was quite extraordinary just\u003cbr\u003ehow well the vines were looking with few vineyards showing signs of hydric stress - a\u003cbr\u003etestament to their resilience and adaptability to harsh conditions. September brought\u003cbr\u003ea considerable drop in temperatures both by day and by night, and the importance\u003cbr\u003eof this cannot be overstated, easing the strain on the vines, and providing propitious\u003cbr\u003econditions for maturations to progress. It is incredible that the Douro has come\u003cbr\u003ethrough such trying conditions, delivering wines at a level of quality that many would\u003cbr\u003enot have believed possible at the start of the vintage.\u003cbr\u003eWINEMAKING\u003cbr\u003eThe grapes for Pombal are hand-picked into small containers.
