Parco dei Monaci is an ancient estate 5 km south of Matera – the historic city of the “Sassi” proclaimed a world heritage site by Unesco. The area falls within the Murgia Materana Park: a slightly undulating limestone plateau, sometimes covered with speckles, which suddenly presents a spectacular anomaly, a very deep canyon crossed by a stream: the Gravina di Matera The walls of this ravine have hosted various forms of civilization since prehistoric times. The territory is home to the most spectacular rock landscape in Italy, on the edge of the gorges there are some of the most fascinating places of worship: the rock churches. Already more than a thousand years ago the Christian monks had begun to dig small cavities in the crumbly soil to arrange shelters and tiny churches. The tenure of the Parco dei Monaci came to the Abbey of Montescaglioso in 1532 following a private bequest: \"a property held with great care by the monks and destined for vineyards and olive groves\". In 1806, with the occupation of the South by Napoleon Bonaparte, the monastic community was suppressed. But in 1815 the Irish Count Laval Nugent von Westmeath in command of the Austrian army freed Rome from the French and defeated the King of Naples Gioacchino Murat. Having put Pope Pius VII back on the throne, Laval Nugent received from him the noble title of Prince of Rome and generous favours: he was married to Donna Giovannina Sforza, princess of Saxony, and as a dowry the tenure of the Parco dei Monaci. With the advent of the unification of Italy proclaimed in 1861, the grange was expropriated and, in 1873, sold at auction to the Manfredi family.
