With an extremely seductive nose boasting black fruit and black currants in its aroma profile, this lush and layered wine demonstrates well-ripened fruit along with well integrated acidity. Chocolate and gravelly with tons of finesse, the powerful tannins are present but round and voluptuous. This CJ has all the components of a great wine: approachability, depth and the ability to age.

“While still perhaps too early to judge, we feel this is easily one of the top three vintages from the seventeen produced to date.” ~ Philippe and Cherie Melka, proprietors

Blend: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot

Production: 1700 cases
Bottling: May of 2015
Aging: 18 months 30% new French oak
Release: January 26, 2016

Professional Reviews

94 points Wine Advocate

The 2013 CJ is a 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot blend aged 18 months in about one-fifth new French oak. This is one of my favorite wines in his portfolio, and the good news is that there are 1,800 cases. It has an absolutely spectacular nose of white chocolate, grilled meats, blackcurrants and licorice. The wine is full-bodied, has an opaque purple color, beautiful texture, density and overall richness and length. This wine is showing secondary nuances already, and should continue to evolve gracefully for 15 or more years. Philippe Melka and his wife Cherie will be celebrating their 20th anniversary making wines as consultants in Napa Valley in 2016. Although they have a Who’s Who list of clients, they also produce three levels of wine under the Melka logo. Metisse is their vineyard-designated wines made in Napa, Mekerra from Sonoma’s Knights Valley, and the newest offering is the Syrah-based wines called Majestique, which to date emerges from Paso Robles. (RP, 10/2015)

92 points Vinous

The 2013 CJ is Philippe and Cherie Melka's entry-level wine. Plump, juicy and expressive, the CJ delivers tons of intensity and depth in a forward, open-knit style to drink now and over the next few years. Mocha, blackberry jam, cloves and new leather meld into the voluptuous finish. Philippe and Cherie Melka have turned out a gorgeous set of wines. The Melka range encompasses vineyards in St. Helena, Knights Valley and Paso Robles. For ease of future reference, I have reviewed all the wines here. It's always interesting to taste a winemaker's own wines and compare them to those he or she make for their clients. Stylistically, the Melka wines offer plenty of depth and intensity, but they don't sit on the edge of ripeness like some of the Melka consulting projects do, like Vineyard 29 and Lail, which are probably the ripest wines Philippe Melka makes.
