Many vintages need a decade or more of cellaring to really find their greatness. These wines bring one back to the old days of California wine, when wines were allowed to age gracefully and develop in the bottle. Winemaker Bob Travers, included in the Wine Spectator's roster of Napa \"mavericks\" (July 2002), always maintained his focus on making small quantities of premium wine, destined for a long life. His red wines usually require at least a decade to reach their full potential, some vintages much longer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e96 points John Gilman\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e“The 1984 vintage of Mayacamas cabernet sauvignon is absolutely superb. The wine comes in listed at 12.5 percent alcohol in this warm summer and offers up a beautifully complex and expressive nose of black cherries, red plum, Cuban cigar, a superb base of mountain soil, a hint of petroleum jelly, bonfire, gorgeous spice tones and just a whisper of bell pepper in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and still a bit chewy (in the inimitable Mayacamas style), with a great core of fruit, lovely soil undertow, still some ripe backend tannins and outstanding grip and focus on the very long, very pure and stellar finish. This is another of Bob Travers’ masterpieces from this variety, and though it is not quite as seamless as the nearly perfect 1985, this is a brilliant bottle of cabernet sauvignon! With a bit of decanting, this is drinking very well indeed, though further cellaring will allow its remaining tannin to continue to soften up more completely. But, there is no rush to drink this wine, as it probably has another forty to fifty years of primetime drinking still ahead of it, as it is most assuredly structured like the great Château Latours of yesteryear. Even at thirty years of age, the 1984 is a youngster, with enough depth, structure and intensity to drink well for another 10-20 years. Iron, sage and leather are some of the notes that gradually open up in the glass. The simply, inescapable fact is that the 1984 is going to need more time in bottle before it delivers the kind of drinking experience that is typical of the 1970s wines today, which I suppose makes all the sense in the world.
