The goal\u003cbr\u003ewas to capture the unique character of this region defined by the\u003cbr\u003eproximate Pacific Ocean, coastal redwoods, and river valleys.\u003cbr\u003eNOTES\u003cbr\u003eVintage 2022 gave us another extreme drought year with a warm,\u003cbr\u003edry winter producing early budbreak. The vines responded to the\u003cbr\u003estress by putting out a tiny fruit set. Vintners who love small yields\u003cbr\u003eand the concentrated wines that follow, rejoiced. Growers who get\u003cbr\u003epaid on tonnage, groaned. And so it went. The growing conditions\u003cbr\u003ewere perfect until the Labor Day Weekend \"Heat Dome\" which\u003cbr\u003ebrought Phoenix-like temps to all of California. We started picking\u003cbr\u003eas early as we could to get the fruit out of the sun. The growers that\u003cbr\u003ehad some water to combat the heat, faired best. Those who didn't\u003cbr\u003eended up dropping a lot of sun burned fruit onto the ground.\u003cbr\u003eMore triage was done in the winery to ensure that only healthy\u003cbr\u003eclusters were used. Once again, we were surprised by the pure\u003cbr\u003eflavors draining out of the fermenters a few weeks later. Seems\u003cbr\u003ethese California vines are inoculated against extreme weather\u003cbr\u003eevents--especially the more mature vineyards in the Potter Valley.\u003cbr\u003eThe 2022 Mendo Pinot is a wide aperture view of the county--\u003cbr\u003ewith fruit from four disparate AVAs: Potter Valley, Yorkville Highlands,\u003cbr\u003eAnderson Valley, and Comptche.
