He was among the first generation of the early Barossa\u003cbr\u003eGerman pioneers of South Australia, and establighed the family winery in 1868. Johann\u003cbr\u003eChristian arrived as a skilled stonemason and wheelwright and planted his first vineyards in the\u003cbr\u003ehigh country of the picturesque Eden Valley. The wine is produced from Old-Vine Shiraz planted\u003cbr\u003ea century later, in 1968, by fourth generation Cyril Henschke.\u003cbr\u003eThe Wheelwright comes from 50 year old vines on deep sandy loam over prismatic clay. It is the\u003cbr\u003ecoolest of the four Henschke vineyard sites where they grow Shiraz giving the wine a distinct\u003cbr\u003eand focused red fruits character. A composed, cool, and long season for the 2017 vintage\u003cbr\u003ebrought out the purity and vibrance of the wines, and provided for ageability of up to 40 years.\u003cbr\u003eT A S T I N G N O T E S\u003cbr\u003eMedium garnet with crimson hues. Lifted aromas of red plum, red currant, blue and black\u003cbr\u003eberries, rose hip and black pepper, with notes of bay leaf, sage, crushed flowering herbs, anise\u003cbr\u003eand hints of cedar. The palate is rich and plush, deep and concentrated with layers of spicy red\u003cbr\u003echerry and red currant, interwoven with anise and vanilla.
