This is an old, low bearing, small berry\/cluster clone 6 - the Jackson Station clone.\u003cbr\u003eYields are about 1-11\/2 tons per acre. Our growing season is longer and cooler than what many\u003cbr\u003emight assume. It is comparable in many ways to the Howell Mountain region of the Napa Valley.\u003cbr\u003eRed, iron-laden soils of grainy decomposed granite. Warm days moderated by afternoon Delta\u003cbr\u003ebreezes and cool night air from the High Sierra peaks just 50 miles to our East. Closer to harvest\u003cbr\u003eas the days become shorter, fruit cooled overnight takes half the day to warm again and matures\u003cbr\u003eslowly. Most of the grapes are fermented in 5 ton open top fermenters and hand-punched. The\u003cbr\u003eremainder are fermented in a 10 ton closed top tank where the cap is irrigated with a special\u003cbr\u003edevice during pump-overs. Lots are combined at a later date depending on the winemaker’s\u003cbr\u003ediscretion. Aging takes place in 100% French Bordeaux barrels from Taransaud cooperage. They\u003cbr\u003eare thin-staved Bordeaux-styled Center of France barrels and 50% are brand new each year. The\u003cbr\u003eremainder of the barrels are from the two previous years vintages. The wine is in barrel for two\u003cbr\u003eyears prior to bottling in the Fall of 2016. Following our extended élevage protocols, it was bottle-\u003cbr\u003eaged 6 years prior to release.\u003cbr\u003eColor is dark purple, with complex aromas of cedar, tobacco, and asian spice box. The fruit is\u003cbr\u003eblackberry\/cassis\/olive with a pleasant St. Julien-like texture, mineral-infused flavors, and\u003cbr\u003esappiness. The wine has good balance, intensity, a plush texture, and length.
