Named after the little stream which runs through the property, and planted with vines since the 9th century, it was established as a winery in 1612 by Capuchin friars. After being sold as national property during the French Revolution, it was acquired by the Faller brothers in 1898 who then left it to their son and nephew, Théo. Théo Faller was a prominent figure in Alsace winegrowing and an ardent defender of quality wine production. After his death in 1979, his wife Colette, his daughters Catherine and Laurence, and their team continued the family’s passion for the great wines of Alsace and its unrelenting commitment to excellence.

Tasting Notes

The nose opens with enticing aromas of figs, ripe pear and toasted almond. With an opulent and creamy texture on the palate, this wine unveils pure intensity and great balance. Very long and ele- gant finish.

Critical Acclaim

97 points Stephen Tanzer

(10% alcohol, 174 g/l r.s. and 8.9 acidity) Pure botrytis nose dominated by tangy crystallized orange and lemon peel. Wonderfully sweet but cut by sharp citrussy acidity that gives this extremely unevolved wine an almost painful quality today. It's remarkable that the varietal character comes through so clearly at this level of ripeness. The bracing finish mounts inexorably and goes on for minutes. An extraordinary sweet wine, likely to last for two or three decades.

95 points Wine Advocate

A 2005 Pinot Gris Altenbourg Quintessence de Grains Nobles erupts from the glass with smoke, spice, pineapple, peach and honey. Extraordinarily rich yet luscious and refined, it finishes with astonishing clarity, exhibiting bell-clear essence of peach, pineapple, and orange awash in honey and liberally dusted with brown spices. Amazing now -- and by no means superficially sweet -- this should gain complexity over a 20-25 year period.
