Not really, just from the colour of a wine. Now a sniff. The Romanée-Conti is not quite ready to reveal all just yet, a little bit of oak, a sensation of what is to come, but also don’t speak to me for another six months. Three minutes later it relents enough for me to start to see the real wine, the heart of the different red fruits, with an incomparable sense of balance which dismisses the vintage character. A fine balance of acidity, certainly some tannins, blackcurrant, bramble, perfect strawberry, the point is not about the different flavours, but the serenity of them and how perfectly complete and complex this wine is. Drink from 2035-2050. Tasted Oct 2024.

Professional Reviews

99

Decanter

Review Date: 01/2026
The complexity and depth hinted at from the barrel have come into focus now that the Romanée-Conti 2023 has been bottled. The aromas seduce with the same type of opulence evident in La Tâche, with ripe black cherry and plummy fruit, notes of ginger and anise, and a hint of earth, smoke and spice. On the palate, the wine is approachable yet more substantial, and remains exquisitely balanced. This wine is likely to drink well earlier than some vintages, but should live for decades in a proper cellar. 8,100 bottles produced.(CC)

99

Vinous

Review Date: 02/2026
The 2023 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru was picked on September 11 at 37.7 hl/ha. It is probably predictable and perhaps nauseating for me to write that in almost 30 years of tasting Romanée-Conti at this primordial stage, it ranks as one of the best. It is blessed with a mesmerising bouquet that gains complexity in the glass, mainly wild strawberry and raspberry, Earl Grey sat in its china cup a bit too long, hints of damp autumn leaves and a pinch of white pepper—all delivered with stunning delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, not powerful, utterly refined, perfectly pitched acidity with a transparency that is unrivalled within the Côte d'Or. Astonishing length. You can feel this lingering a minute after you swallow the wine (you don't really think I used the spittoon?) It builds in an amazing crescendo with a sense of effortlessness. 8,100 bottles produced.(NM)

98

Tim Atkin

Review Date: 01/2025
Majestic on the nose, this starts off with forest floor, green peppercorn, succulent black fruits and spiced tea. The palate gushes with smooth tannins and enrapturing, balanced acidity. The magic here is that the palate feels easy-going, despite there being ample structure underlying the robust, fruit-filled core. Energetic minerality underlines the long, focused finish that reels off perfumed summer flowers.

98

Wine Spectator

Review Date: 02/2026
Though silky and ethereal, the Romanée-Conti doesn’t outshine La Tâche at this stage. Rather, the two bookend the Vosne-Romanée range from the Domaine stylistically—the former delivering power, the latter finesse. The Romanée-Conti exhibited rose, cherry, currant and a green, vegetal accent (in the best sense) aligned to a vibrant structure and silky texture (98 points, non-blind).

95-

98

Burghound

Review Date: 01/2025
Note: a monopole of 1.81 ha. There is an expression in French that always makes me chuckle because, depending on the tone of voice used, it can be so blunt in its exasperation, which is fiche-moi la paix!; this is roughly translated as, in its gentlest version, "leave me alone'." However, when said with irritation, it devolves to something more along the lines of "get the..." well, you get the idea. My point is that the nose is the latter version as it makes crystal clear that it really would prefer to be left alone and it is only with great reluctance does it consent to share its cool, airy and perfumed aromas of floral, exotic tea and enormous range of spice elements. On the palate, the medium weight plus flavors are scarcely more welcoming as they too are exceptionally backward and grumpy and while overtly mineral-driven and strikingly precise, the overall impression is a compact, extremely primary and balanced effort. The one attribute however that it can't help but share is the incredible length as the ever-so-slightly warm finish simply doesn't quit. I could taste it 3 hours later and while it's even less advanced than it normally is, that doesn't mean impenetrable. In sum, the '23 RC is seriously firm and youthfully austere but it's not hard or inelegant, indeed the word Zen comes to mind. Much like the LT or the Richebourg, this is a wine to buy and forget but it should really be something when it's finally ready for prime time.*Burghound Don't Miss!*

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0649/9713/0464/files/domaine-de-la-romanee-conti-romanee-conti-grand-cru_1_7d28dcca-a9e9-46a4-aa3e-602d9e263d13.jpg?v=1787343819
https://www.mywineconnection.com/products/domaine-de-la-romanee-conti-romanee-conti-grand-cru-2023-750ml
