Unlike beer or spirits where bottling dates or cumulative age are noted for the benefit of the consumer, vintage ties back to the agriculture, to the growing season. It provides a fundamentally different perspective that shifts, at least superficially, the onus from the winery toward the role of nature in determining the characteristics of a wine toward its greater appreciation or enjoyment. Vintage is also somewhat mysterious. It can’t be measured, quantified and it can be difficult to characterize. And while nature doesn’t explicitly create wine, in as much as a tree creates a wooden table, the vintage provides the building blocks for us, the winemakers. It’s clear that our perspective on striving to accurately convey the growing season coupled with our wines’ longevity tie together a common thread that connects all of our vintages from the last five decades to one another.\"\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e-Winemaker Matt Crafton\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVINTAGE WEATHER\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s amazing how seven consecutive days, shortly before harvest began, will define this entire vintage. As a not-so-subtle reminder of the need for humility and our inability to predict the future, the high-pressure weather system and its associated heat that began at the beginning of September fundamentally altered the charactersitics and expression of what had been a very classic, elementary Napa vintage. Balance and elegance moved to suppleness and concentration. Red fruit became dark fruit. The resulting wines are beautiful but a far cry from what we expected in August, a truly unique perspective from a truly unique vintage.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTASTING NOTES\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDriven by dark fruit, predominantly blackberry and cassis, the aromas are rich and intense. They are closely followed by spicy clove and vanilla before yielding to pipe tobacco and a touch of caramel. On the palate, the tannins are quite supple and dance between elevating the subtle streak of minerality and foiling the acid that slices through the body of the wine with zest and freshness. Strawberry and cranberry sauce highlight the transition to the finish and apex as the breadth of the wine expands.
