But\u003cbr\u003e\nup in the Gabilan Range, above the eastern side of the valley, in the\u003cbr\u003e\ndiminutive Chalone appellation just to the southwest of the granitic\u003cbr\u003e\nspires of the Pinnacles National Park, an entirely different, even more\u003cbr\u003e\ncompelling stripe of Pinot Noir emerges. The weathered granitic\u003cbr\u003e\ndebris from those volcanic formations commingled with veins of\u003cbr\u003e\ncalcareous rock, the compressed remains of marine organisms from\u003cbr\u003e\nseabed uplifted by ancient tectonic activity, yields wines which, as at\u003cbr\u003e\nEnz on the other side of the Gabilan Range, resist easy varietal\u003cbr\u003e\nidentification. We have observed that the Pinot Noirs from Rodnick\u003cbr\u003e\nFarm somehow recall the Nebbiolo-based wines of Alto Piemonte,\u003cbr\u003e\nwith their roasted, meaty tones overlying tart cherry fruit, and a silken\u003cbr\u003e\ntexture earned only with time, and exceptional terroir. Come to Chal-\u003cbr\u003e\none if lava bombs, rather than fruit bombs, are your jam. The 2021\u003cbr\u003e\ncombines younger blocks of Pommard and 114, with older blocks of\u003cbr\u003e\nthe Swan and Chalone 46 clones planted by the late Dick Graff in\u003cbr\u003e\n1986. Kurt Gollnick and Janet Rogers purchased the property from\u003cbr\u003e\nBob Antle, and have continued to farm it -and Dick Graff’s old kitchen\u003cbr\u003e\ngarden -organically, with all necessary attendant heritage breeds of\u003cbr\u003e\nsheep and herding dogs adding local color, compost, and legit regen-\u003cbr\u003e\nerative farming bragging rights.
